According to a September 18 report by FBC Fukui Broadcasting, two men who run food and drink establishments in Fukui City have been arrested on suspicion of arranging sham marriages and having false marriage registrations submitted to obtain residence status in Japan.
Allegations described in the report
Citing police, FBC reported that the two men allegedly introduced prospective spouses to two Filipina women. The parties are suspected of registering marriages despite having no actual married life together, resulting in false family register entries. The intermediaries are believed to have received fees for the introductions.
The report states that the two women and two Fukui men in their 60s who were introduced as spouses were also arrested.
Suspects deny the allegations
According to FBC, the two business owners deny the allegations, saying that they only made introductions. Police are also investigating possible involvement by an anonymous, fluid criminal group, commonly known as “tokuryu”. That possibility has not been established as a finding.
